About Our Overnight Visits
PIER Program: Longitudinal monitoring of psychosis-risk
PIER is a comprehensive clinical research program for individuals aged 12-45 who are experiencing unusual changes in their mood, thoughts, perception, and/or behavior.
We are actively recruiting for a research study to better understand the factors that contribute to long-term clinical and functional outcomes for adolescents and young adults who may be at heightened risk for psychosis. If you would like to learn more about this study, please contact us at pbs-pier@uiowa.edu, or visit our website where you can fill out a brief screening questionnaire.

Anxiety and Sleep in Children and Adolescents
The purpose of this research study is to investigate the role of sleep in brain development and mental health in children and adolescents. The study involves brain imaging and an overnight visit to our lab that will involve sleep monitoring.
We are looking for individuals 9-13 years of age who:
- have a diagnosis of generalized anxiety disorder, separation anxiety disorder, social anxiety disorder
- do not have a history of mental illness
You will be compensated up tp $150 for completion of the study. If you would like to learn more about this study, please contact us at PBS-naplab@uiowa.edu or 319-467-3215. If you are interested in participating, please fill out this brief screening survey: https://redcap.icts.uiowa.edu/redcap/surveys/?s=KNJ79R7PP33MWJJA.
You may also email (to indicate interest or ask questions about the study).
Sleep & Stroke
The purpose of this study is to examine the role of sleep in recovery of function in stroke survivors. Of particular interest is twitching during rapid eye movement (REM) sleep and brain oscillations during non-REM (NREM) sleep.
You will be compensated up to $500 for completion of participation in this study. If you would like to learn more about this study, please contact us at PBS-naplab@uiowa.edu or 319-467-3215. More information can be found here.
Sleep and Mental Health in Youth Study
This study aims to investigate the role of sleep and circadian rhythmicity on mental health in adolescence. Our focus is on individuals aged 12-19 years of age, because less than 20% of adolescents get an optimal 9 hours of sleep on school nights, despite sleep need remaining constant during this time We use wearable devices to capture sleep/wake patterns and circadian rhythm, questionnaires pertaining to sleep habits and mood, and a smartphone app based on Ecological Momentary Assessment (EMA) techniques to capture affect and symptoms. Measurements across extended periods of time will allow us, for the first time to our knowledge in this age group, to investigate the relations between day-to-day fluctuations in sleep and affect.
You will be compensated up to $100 if you participate in this study. If you would like to learn more about this study, please contact us at PBS-naplab@uiowa.edu or 319-467-3215. More information, as well as a scannable QR code, can also be found here.
